Sinn Fein election workers take to the streets of Derriaghy and Lisburn

Published: 15 February, 2009

As the European election, to be held on Thursday, 4 June, approaches, Sinn Fein activists have already been out on the streets.

Over the past two weekends, election workers delivered an 8 page Sinn Fein bulletin in many parts of Derriaghy and Lisburn including Redwoods, The Cutts, Queensway, Killeaton, Richmond Court, Garvey Manor, Belsize Road, Moss Road, Greenburn, Kirkwoods, Belmont Road, Haddington Hill, Burrendale Manor, Woodbrook eco-village, Thaxton Village and Barnfield Road.

Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brun, Lisburn councillors Angela Nelson, Arder Carson and Lagan Valley MLA Paul Butler joined the Sinn Fein team to help distribute the publication.

Councillor Nelson said:

''The nationalist population in the Derriaghy and Lisburn areas has increased rapidly in the last few years.

''I regularly deal with constituency issues in the area and Sinn Fein is keen to let people know of the work that we are doing on their behalf in the European Parliament, at the Assembly, in Leinster House and in Lisburn council.

''In the council, the Sinn Fein team has been battling unionist discrimination for many years and we are ensuring that the voice of nationalists in the Derriaghy and Lisburn areas is heard.

''Bairbre de Brun is the Sinn Fein candidate in the North in the European election and we will be doing our best to ensure that Bairbre is reelected as an MEP.

''She has worked exceptionally hard for her constituents over the past 5 years on a whole range of issues, including renewable energy, economic development, waste management issues, promoting recycling and opposing incineration.

''Bairbre is also a member of the EU committee on climate change and has travelled to China and the United States to promote measures to combat the damage being done to the atmosphere.

''She has also brought many delegations over to the parliament including the families of victims of collusion, families bereaved through suicide, autism campaigners, Disability Action, economic development groups, women's groups and Irish language organisations.

''Our aim is that our republican message is heard as widely as possible.''
