New Barnsley Easter Tuesday commemoration to take place

Published: 8 April, 2009

Republicans in the Greater New Barnsley area have been busy this week preparing for their annual Easter Tuesday commemoration.

The chairperson of the local Pearse Jordan Sinn Fein cumann, said:

''Every year great effort is put into organising the commemoration in the area by the commemoration committee, Sinn Fein and local people.

''This event means a lot to us as we remember those from the area who died during the conflict.

''We will remember our patriot dead, those on the rolls of honour and remembrance, who gave their lives for their country.''

New Barnsley Sinn Fein councillor Janice Austin is urging members of the community to come out and show their pride at being Irish Republicans.

''This annual commemoration is always well attended by the families and comrades of those on the rolls of honour and remembrance.

''I would encourage all republicans from the area and from further afield to come to the commemoration and to wear an Easter lily.''

The commemoration will take place at the New Barnsley Republican Memorial Garden at 3pm on Easter Tuesday, 14th April.

Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brun will be the main speaker.

There will be a function immediately afterward in the Sliabh Dubh bar with a buffet, folk group, live band and a disco.
