Fian John Dempsey tournament to take place

This year witnesses the 28th anniversary of the death of Fian John Dempsey, who was killed in action on the same day that Oglach Joe McDonnell died on hunger strike in Long Kesh - 8th July 1981.

John was shot by a British soldier at the Falls Road Bus Depot in Divis Drive. He was unarmed. On the 20th anniversary of his death, a group of his friends and comrades from the greater Turf Lodge area, in conjunction with Gort Na Móna CLG, established a tournament to commemorate and celebrate John's life as a Republican and a sportsman.

This year the tournament, which has gone from strength to strength, will take place on Sunday 2nd August, and is all the more poignant as this year commemorates the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Na Fianna Éireann.

Participating GAA teams and members of the public are asked to assemble at the Fian John Dempsey memorial plaque in Divis Drive at the bottom of the Glen Road at 11.00am. The procession will be led by the Éire Nua Republican Flute Band and a colour party and will make its way through Turf Lodge to Gort Na Móna CLG for the tournament.

Gort Na Mona will be the setting for a fun day with bouncy castles, tug o' war, face painting and a barbeque continuing throughout the day.
