Adams supports Rith 2010Published: 27 February, 2010
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams today launched the party's participation in Rith 2010 - a 1600 km relay-run across Ireland which will raise money for Irish Language projects throughout Ireland.
The relay-run begins in Belfast on March 9 and will last 9 days, finishing in Galway on Saint Patrick's Day, March 17th. Thousands of people are expected to join in along the route which will see the participants pass through 250 towns and villages. A specially carved baton, made from Irish bog oak and containing a message of support from President Mary McAleese, will be carried on the journey. It will be opened and read at the end of the run. People taking part will secure sponsorship and it is possible to buy a kilometre as part of the fund raising effort. Gerry Adams has purchased a kilometre and today he was photographed wearing one of the t-shirts that participants will wear. Mr. Adams said:
This is a unique and innovative way to increase awareness and support for the Irish language as well as to raise money for Irish language projects. This will be a real celebration of the Irish language. Good luck to everyone taking part." |
