Rally to mark closure of Mountpottinger Barracks

A rally to celebrate the closure of Mountpottinger Barracks in the Short Strand will take place on Monday 31st August at 7pm. There will be pageantry at the event outside the Barracks and also local speakers. Immediately after the rally traditional musicians will perform at a celebration in Saint Matthews Social Club. Falls residents, community activists and political representatives handed in letters of protest to the office of SDLP Social Development minister, Margaret Ritchie, this afternoon, Wednesday 19th August. West Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann is urging the community to attend the march and rally this Sunday, 16th August, to remember the 40th anniversary of the pogroms of 1969 when many homes in the Falls and Clonard areas were attacked and burnt by unionist mobs supported by the RUC and 'B' Specials.
