A wreath laying ceremony was held on Saturday evening, August 2, to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the death on hunger strike of IRA volunteer and TD for Cavan/Monaghan Kieran Doherty.

The ceremony took place at the Kieran Doherty monument beside the Doherty family home in Commedagh Drive in the Andersonstown area.

A large number of family, friends and comrades of the late hunger striker gathered for the ceremony.

West Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Paul Maskey spoke of how republicans today are continuing the struggle that Kieran fought for.

Mr Maskey said:

''Today we gather here to remember the life of a great Irishman and patriot, IRA Volunteer Kieran Doherty.

''Kieran Doherty fought for a free and united Ireland and today Sinn Fein are carrying on that struggle to achieve a 32 county socialist republic.

''We are working throughout this island to improve the lives of all the people and in this area, the Andersonstown Sinn Fein cumann is involved in constituency work and campaigning issues.

''I would encourage people to join their local Sinn Fein cumann and to become involved in working for the people of this area and help advance the struggle for Irish unity.''

Veteran republican Bobby Storey laid a wreath at the monument on behalf of the republican movement and Belfast Mayor, councillor Tom Hartley, laid a wreath on behalf of Belfast Sinn Fein.
