Ramsey urges over 60s to secure free travel passes

Published: 1 September, 2008

Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA Sue Ramsey is encouraging everyone over 60 to ensure that they secure their entitlement to free travel on public transport, which is scheduled to be introduced as and from October, by applying for their free travel Smart Pass.

Ms Ramsey said:

"The lowering of the eligibility criteria for free travel on public transport from 65 to 60 years is a welcome step in addressing social exclusion and isolation that many people in this age group have to contend with.

''I welcome DRD Minister Conor Murphy's commitment to the introduction of this measure by securing the necessary funding in the budget.

''This is another example of locally elected representatives delivering for the people in a real and substantive way.

"I would therefore encourage everyone over sixty to ensure that they secure their entitlement to free travel on Translink bus and rail services, which is scheduled to be introduced as and from October, by applying for their free travel passes.

"Application forms are available from all local Translink bus or railway stations or call the hotline on 0845 600 0049.

''Members of the west Belfast community who are eligible should take this opportunity for free public transport, particularly given the ever increasing cost of living which has had a massive impact on local people.''
