Sue Ramsey MLA
West Belfast MLA Sue Ramsey first became involved in republican politics in the mid-1980s. In the early 1990s Sue was the chairperson of the Twinbrook Sinn Fein cumann and was also the chairperson of the Lagan Valley Sinn Fein comhairle ceantair. In the mid-1990s she became chair of the West Belfast comhairle ceantair for around a year. Sue was a councillor on Lisburn council from 1997 to 2005. In 1998, Sue was part of the Good Friday Agreement negotiations team, working in an administrative role alongside the late Siobhan O'Hanlon. She was also a member of Sinn Fein's Belfast executive in the late 1990s when the late Pat McGeown was the chair. Sue stood as an Assembly candidate in West Belfast in 1998 and was elected with 3,946 votes. In the 2003 Assembly elections Sinn Fein maintained the 4 seats they won in 1998 but lost out on winning a 5th seat by 87 votes. Unfortunately, the 5th candidate who so narrowly missed out was Sue. Not to be deterred, Sue was co-opted back into the Assembly in 2004 after the election of West Belfast MLA Bairbre de Brun to the European parliament and she was re-elected again in March 2007 with 4,715 votes when Sinn Fein took 5 out of 6 seats in West Belfast. During this time, Sue was active in the role of elected reps coordinator in the cuige area. Sue is now chair of the Department of Education and Learning committee, a member of the health committee, a member of the all party working group on children and the Sinn Fein spokesperson on trade unions. She is heavily involved in the Connolly House constituency office. She has been a member of the management committee of the west Belfast festival and was involved in setting up the Just Us theatre company with Chrissie Keenan and others. The group performed plays such as Just a Prisoners Wife and Binlids. |
