Councillor Maire Cush

Veteran republican Maire Cush has been a councillor on Belfast City Council since 2001, representing the Ballymurphy, Whiterock/Westrock, Springhill and Sliabh Dubh areas.

She is a mother of 3 children and is married to Gerard.

Maire has been actively involved in republican politics for over 40 years, joining the republican movement in 1967.

She was interned in 1973 and was in jail for 2 years before being released in 1975.

Maire is a committed community activist and has been heavily involved in the setting up of residents associations in the upper Springfield area.

Since being elected to Belfast City council in 2001, Maire has worked tirelessly for the people of the Greater Ballymurphy area.

She was instrumental in pushing for the setting up the Upper Springfield Safer Neighbourhood Forum which plays a lead role in tackling anti-community behaviour and she was the chairwoman of the West Belfast District Policing Partnership sub-group in 2008.

Maire is a member of the Health and Environment and Parks and Cemeteries committees within Belfast City Council.
